We in Farmington, NM have an annoucement of great impact. We are awaiting another WAlMart, but not a SUPERCENTER this time. Although our town has an actual population of about 45,000, ourt economic base is drawn from the county of San Juan, and also includes some of the greater Durango area, as well as parts of Arizona and Utah. With that area, we increase in economis stature to over 130,000, and Walmart does not yet have all the business. This has prompted them to build a Walmart store on our (economically depressed) East Side, so as to give them a chance to drive out even more small businesses. Whether that affects the greater city economy after a few years won't mean to much to them; if they make it without competition, so be it, but if they drop too much in sales and need to downsize later, that's OK, too. They will have by then sucked this city dry, and can move on without regret. That's what our city fathers don't understand.
