We externalize the side of us that we do not want to own. We look for scapegoats. i think it's being handled as a pandemic, as opposed to AIDS, because we can't assign it a generally unappealing societal target group.
And we need another good non-specific virus (cancer, anyone?) to cut out some of us vermin from this little world.
